Historical walking tour of Palermo

The Palatine Chapel, founded in 1130, was according to Guy de Maupassant: “the most surprising religious jewel of human thought and created by an artist”. It represents the non plus ultra of the cultural and artistic syncretism generated in the Norman Palermo, with the Byzantine mosaics, the opus sectile floor of Byzantine and Romanesque origin, declined according to Islamic ornamental models, the wooden muqarnas ceiling with Islamic paintings represent an unique exemplary of the Mediterranean Middle Ages and of the history of universal art.

From the Norman cathedral of Palermo, where Federico II is buried, we will reach the Piazza Pretoria, also known as “square of Shame”, just a few meters from the Quattro Canti, the exact center of the historic city of Palermo.

The Church of Saint Catherine is located in the heart of the historic centre, between Piazza Bellini and Piazza Pretoria, in the same area of other well-known architectural landmarks like the churches of Martorana and San Cataldo. The church is a synthesis of Sicilian Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance styles.

Tour of Monreale

The Cathedral of Monreale is one of the greatest existent examples of Norman architecture; since 2015 it is part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale UNESCO Heritage site.

The building is entirely covered of golden mosaics, depicting stories from both the Old and New Testament and arranged in tiers, divided by horizontal and vertical bands.

The splendid Benedictine cloister is annexed to the Cathedral, it was founded in 1174 by the Norman King William II and it is the fulcrum of the entire abbey that is developed around it.

Square in shape, is articulated by pointed arches on coupled columns, tetrastyle in the four corners, variously decorated with mosaics, with motifs late-classical phytomorphic or "chevron".

Similarly, the decoration of the capitals is rich and various.

You can find themes related to religious iconography, Old and New Testament, animals taken from the medieval bestiary and of the Middle East tradition with phytomorphic motifs.

A day at the beach

Mondello was originally a small fishing village situated on an unhealthy marshland near Palermo but, at the end of the 19th century, Prince Francesco Lanza di Scalea, with the help of a Belgian real estate company, built a plant for the drainage of swampy waters to the sea and from 1912 onwards Mondello became the seat of the high bourgeoisie and the aristocracy.

Mondello is characterized by a sandy bay that binds the two promontories, called Monte Gallo and Mount Pellegrino, with a coastline of white sand that nowadays is approximately 1.5 kilometers long. The Natural Reserve of Capo Gallo and the reserve of Monte Pellegrino are nearby.
Today the area is known for its beach and for its Art Nouveau villas, which characterize the architecture of the place.
